he went to grade school that was half white and half blooded indian His family turn to christians and turn down the old indian religion. he thought that his father turntothe whiteman ways . in the sixties they had to leave christianity because of the civil rights movement the church pressure them to leave.

he also talks about the american people want to be yonger and be white.I think that they want to be somebody else to reach the american dream . To be like every body else in society. Also people in america have to grow up be your own age.

Vernon Jarret

Vernon Jarret is a columnist for the Chicago Tribune . He grew up in Paris Tennessee . The only thing to do in Paris is to watch train come in and leave . This means that people are going somewhre or somebody leaving.The trains always symbolized mobility.
The people of paris thought that chicago was the promised land.

Vernon wanted to come to chicago so he join the navy .Vernon thought that in chicago black people could become some body and can have a place in society . That blacks were more respected . He also thought that education and respect will make him successful person.

I Think that what Vernon is trying to say that Today youth dont respect their selves and other . Also they dont want to be educated and they want to be somebody without edudation. I thinK that if people believe in their selves they can become successful like Mr jarret.

CP Ellis

CP Ellis is 53 year old man . All his life he has been a low class white man . He wasnt seccesssful in life. His father was an acoholic and died at age of 48. He was every young when his father died age17. His father was a member of Ku Klux Klan. Every thing bad that happen to him he blamed it at black people .

He wanted to be somebody so he join the Ku Klux Klan . He became president of Ku KLux KLAn . So someday he had to work with black lady on education . At first he had trouble to work with the lady so they put outside the problems so they can work.
he realized that blacks had the same struggles as him.

I think that cp did wrong but I understand him because when somethings goes wrong you can blamed on some body else . But he realized on time that blacks are human being s to Not just people that you can blamed every thing bad in the world .

Oscar Heline

Oscar heline was 87 years old man who lived in Iowa .At the time many farmer are losing their farms and they could nt get of debt . Some farmers lose control . They block the highway .Mr. heline didnt want to join them . so he work as the lobbyisttrying to get something past to help the farmers .

Many farmers lost their farms.the farmers were losing all the had and would never get out of debt. they did every thing to feed their families. the crazy thing they did was to kill all pigs and raise the price of the pigs .The solution of the problem was worldwar II this created jobs.

This can relate to the time that we are living in a recession many people with out a job, foreclouse , and people in debt. The president and congress working every day to get this economy going . People are losing every they got. people are trying to getfood to their table.

This part of the book it talk about how the great depression how effect everyone in america but it most talk about how the depression affected the farmer . how they could nt work because they didnt had any thing to work with .

how people seen to just give up this was a hard for americans not just farmers . how the were facing for foreclouse . they dont have any to work with because thebanks to away every thing . the authors thalks on how the small towns were all abandoned and deserted streets.

this part of the talks about the struggle of immigrants and americans in the great depression . how you can lose your home and struggle to live.this can connect to right now because we are in a recession and it can turn into a depression.

Ed was nineteen went to fight world war II . the war was hard the Japanese were not the same like the germans . they dont gave up they always put a fight . the american soldiers were so young almost every one was younger than 21. the thing that shock him the most was that you cannot trust any body. Also the feelings the US soldiers showed .

How the war created young man into monster . The way he described how the took off the teeth of jap soldiers.how an american soldier kill an old lady that she was asking for help.he saw horrible things in japan . How young good americans didnt had sypathy.how he had badfeelings for war.

What he taks about is the feelings changed in war the you dont have the good feelings that you had . You come back with killings in your mind and without a hearth. His war experienced was disturbing of how much killing he saw.

Lucy Jefferson was an african american woman . She was a woman that had to much pride and she loved to read . She lived in Chicago. she was a woman that worked in a hospital and she had to kids .She thought that she didnt needed it walfare . she was had food inthe table. She was a woman that did nt needed any body help to support her family.

Lucy was very indepent she didnt want the help of the goverment. she heard to many stereotypes of black peoplebut she prove it wrong . She workhard and alone to support his family .She read many books she didnt wanted to be ignorant like white people thougth.

I think that Lucy represent the woman in america that doesnt need anybodies help that can be singlean still educate and support her kids . that is determate that any thing is not going to stop her.

Tom Kearney

Tom Kearney was a policeman. He was an Irish Catholic in Chicago. His grandfather, his father and he had been born in Chicago. He talks about how had was for his dad to find job how is the city during that time. In this community there was a company that controlled every thing the wages , rent ,and prices all depended on the company.

Tom Kearney belive in intergration . he thinks that a colored man could have the same things as a white man. he was very surprised on the fact that teens actually did care about americathat new what was going on in the world. He also talk about how you dont know your neighbors .

this can connect to america today . In american communities you dont even Know the people who leave next door . Like me I dont even know the lady that leaves next door the only thing I know is that I hate her .

Larry Henemann

Larry Henemann was 43 year old writer of two novels and winner of national book award.
He went to the Vietnam war.he served in vietnam for one year.he went to college but he didnt had movey to pay for it so he was drafted.Also two other members of his family had been drafted.

After Vietnam larry got a job in the CTA as a bus driver .HE said that it was the worst decision of his life. It remind him about his time overseas. He was in a mad mood. He kick people of the bus .He thought that the war was shit . He didnt like war parades because it sem like if war was right.

Larry is trying to say is that if the war doesnt kill you it makes you crazy. When you come back you dont feel the same. you have memories of war that would be with you al your life.

Diane Romano

Diane Romano was a single mother of six children Diane thought that every one was equal no matter the colored . she wanted to be a lawyer .25years past she now has a college degree. She now work for a large federal agency investigating violation of law .
Diane feels towards people of colored began to changed.

Diane deals with many criminals that are african americans so her feelings changed .
Diane work made her think that all african americans are all the same that they were bad people. she knew that that was wrong the way she was thinking.
She would hear people talking about a black people and even she knew it was wrong she would laugh along.

her job made her think on something she didnt believe in . she is no the only one that what they see they believe. many people feel the same way even thou they are not racesthey belive in stereotypes.
